Compostelanhon-Based Queso Teaching Model in the New Normal: A Grounded Theory

Abstract

This study explored the importance of Queseo Festival to the lives of Compostelanhons in Compostela, Cebu, Philippines. Thereafter, a generated innovative teaching model applicable to the new normal set-up in education was proposed. Specifically, the study sought to answer the following objectives: (1) narrate the historical and socioeconomic contexts of Queseo Festival; (2) explore the significance of this festivity to the following group of individuals: local government officials; local tourism officers; queseo-makers; and the youth; (3) explain the contributions and prospects of this celebration in the aspects of the: economy; sociocultural; education; and governance; (4) design an innovative teaching model based on the generated findings particularly, the theory generated on how a festival stemming from the local preparation of a cheese known as Queseo can be introduced in the classroom setting and online set-up. There were 16 key informants that were interviewed and asked a set of questions. The narrative data that were obtained were subjected to a Collaizi method of analysis. Results revealed that Queseo Festival mirrors the shared family tradition of queseo-making which signifies great historical and socioeconomic relevance to the town thus, there is a need to preserve and promote the celebration with the collaborative efforts of the leaders and the residents of the town. Further, the study proposed for a Queseo Teaching Model, as a culture-based teaching framework that could be utilized to enhance better classroom instruction. This community- based teaching model aligns with the Republic Act 10533 that promotes for the localization and contextualization of instruction. Therefore, the findings of the study formed the basis of the development of the ‘Compostelanhon-based Queseo Teaching Model in the New Normal.’
