Barriers in Flexible Learning Environment
Abstract
This study explored the barriers faced by students in a flexible learning environment. It involved 23 purposively selected third-year students from Cebu Technological University campus during the academic year 2023–2024. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. Results revealed key challenges: financial constraints, limited access to learning resources, unstable internet connectivity, lack of motivation, distractions in the home environment, physical and mental health issues, limited digital literacy, difficulty adjusting to flexible learning modalities, and problems with time management and self-discipline. Grounded in the lived experiences of selected Filipino students, this study offers insights relevant to other developing nations undergoing similar educational transitions. The findings highlight the urgent need for inclusive digital infrastructure, learner-centered support systems, and policy interventions that address both technological and psychosocial dimensions of flexible education. Institutions globally may benefit from these insights by designing flexible learning models that are equitable, accessible, and responsive to students’ diverse needs.
