Abstract

This study assesses difficulties and possible engineering improvements toward enhancing the productivity and sustainability of a conventional salt manufacturing facility in Antique, Philippines. Qualitative data gathering is depicted in first-hand observations and interviews with workers of the facility and the community. The results are categorized into four prominent themes: structural challenges, thermal efficiency, water management, and perceptions of members of the community about intervention in the field of engineering. Next, because of using bamboo and plastic sheeting that easily deteriorates by salt-action, there are structural problems requiring frequent maintenance and decreased productivity. Additionally, it suffers thermal efficiency due to improper bed orientation and uneven light exposure to delay evaporation. Water management practice is not standardized with uncontrolled inflow and improper drainage leading to irregular salt quality and interrupted production schedules. The community prefers traditional salt-making techniques but is still ready to embrace economical engineering solutions that respect local practices. Some suggested improvements include using durable materials for bed construction, adjusting angles on beds for improved solar exposure, installing controlled water inflow systems, and conducting workshops on sustainable practices. It therefore emphasizes using focused engineering solutions to enhance traditional techniques with salt production while being aligned with a more sustainable and culturally sensitive approach.
